The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: How a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Obtain the Job That Changed My Life

During the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my friend was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had booked a two-week stay there en route to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a large 10-storey building on the Upper West Side known as International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the canteen, where we got some food, sat down, and started talking to other diners.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – close to the engineering department, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I should apply for a job with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that night. The man from Iraq came up to me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but right away told my host that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

In typical New York fashion – a city where opportunities abound – she said: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his name, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in multiple respects. I didn't possess the bravery or nerve to contact anyone at an elite institution and ask for a job. And, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that free tuition.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia resulted in a job in Zurich where I got to know my beautiful French husband, with whom I am raising four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
