Matteo Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Genius in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded 10 goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or was there ever a binding element holding it together in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, but then he publicly stated that the management had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were about to receive for accounting issues. Speculation that he could resign were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, it's been difficult to ascertain if progress is being made or imploding.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Return

A single player continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio during this campaign. He completed last season with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his owning club were attempting to remain there temporarily. The transfer ban forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team with no new signings.

He signed originally during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league with the club in 2022-23, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Finding His True Position

It's possible the coach was persistently working to identify the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
