India's capital Wakes Up to Dangerous Pollution Following Diwali
As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered breathing extremely polluted air that was classified as the "severe" range.
Alarming Air Quality Measurements
Various sections of the city recorded an AQI exceeding 500, which translates to 10x the recommended level set by the global health authority.
Certain monitoring stations, readings of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of 1800, representing 15 to 20 times above safe levels.
Firecracker Ban and Recent Policy Shifts
For the past four years, authorities had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous haze that blankets the capital as colder weather begins.
However earlier this year, the current regional leadership petitioned the judicial authority to seek a modification of the prohibition.
Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically doubted by conservation groups as being only about 30% lower impact – as a compromise between "tradition and ecological concerns".
Judicial Ruling and Reality
To the disappointment of medical and ecological advocates, the court agreed to the request, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during designated periods throughout the Diwali.
Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive violation of the designated hours across the metropolis, with little regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener version.
Many air quality sensors throughout the city registered pollution spiking around midnight to the most severe levels observed during the festival in at least recent memory.
Regional Implications
The widespread use of fireworks during Diwali also sparked a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming worsening air quality in Lahore on pollutants traveling from across the border following the festivities.
Persistent Pollution Issue
Alarmingly severe concentrations of atmospheric toxins in the city have persisted as a serious challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the situation continuing to worsen.
During the festival period, the levels of hazardous particles in the atmosphere has been found to spike to 70% higher the worst levels ever measured in Beijing, which was previously considered as the world's most polluted urban center.
Multiple Contamination Contributors
The situation in the city is caused by a convergence of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, building projects, rubbish burning and pollutants from agricultural fires in neighbouring states of farming communities.
Throughout these areas, rural residents routinely ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, creating hazardous smog that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as colder air sets in.
Medical and Economic Consequences
Both financial and medical impact on the nearly 33 million inhabitants residing in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to various studies.
The contaminated air results in high levels of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, and can potentially cause cancer.
The pollution is estimated to be accounting for ten thousand untimely mortalities each year in the city.
